Steamboat Route in Virginia to NJ ca 1800


From the 1780s Britains and Americans worked to attach steam power to boats, allowing a process which cllowed them to move against a river current. Before then, keel boats and flat boats had been used to navigate important river trade. Private companies successfully moved goods through the river system by about 1800.
