Everyone did not leave an estate or last will and testament naming all the children.  However, they did provide for the children.  One way was dividing up the land and deeding it separately to the children, called Gift Deeds.  The common term was "for love and affection.

One must examine all of the deed records in the county where the ancestor resided to make any sort of connection.
