Task: To Find Ancestors of Bluford Chaffin

Leonard Chaffin b. ca 1778/1794 in NC (1820 Wilkes County Census) and died 1820 in Wilkes County, Georgia, intestate. There is one record of him in the Wilkes County, viz: Annual Returns 1816-1822, p. 342 which book I have been unable to locate.****

Leonard enrolled in the War of 1812, taking his oath as an Ensign in the 168th Militia District on May 11, 1816. (Early Records of Georgia, Wilkes Co., Vol. II, p. 70-80). Leonard was married to Mary (Polly) Smith 23 January 1812 in Wilkes County and was listed as a legatee in right of his wife (Mary, called Zechie) of the estate of Nathan Smith in Wilkes County 11/6/1820.

1820 Wilkes County Census

I examined all of the 1820 Census records and there was only one Chaffin family which had a son under 10 years of age), as follows:

male over 45 (Leonard)
3 females under 10
1 female 26-45 (Mary)

1830 Wilkes County Census

Mary Chaffin, widow, aged 30-40
2 males 15 to 20 (Jesse M. and Bluford)
1 female 10 to 15
