The Census Taker #virginiapioneersnet #vagenealogy

The Census Taker

During the 19th century, taking the census was not an easy job.  Sometimes people on border counties got listed in the wrong county.  This is a good reason to research all adjoining counties in the census as well as the county records.   It is surprising what may be found.  Relatives, friends, neighbors and in-laws generally shared the same road. Also, there is the matter of the spelling.  We cannot critique the census taker for this, as he relied upon those who provided the data. The legend in a good county map is helpful in determining the roads and locations of old farms, churches and cemeteries.  And of course a visit to the area is even more eye-opening!
