Confederate Submarine Discovered in South Carolina

The Confederate Submarine

In February of 1864, the Confederate H.L. Hunley was the first submarine to sink an enemy warship. After wards, the sub sank in the Charleston Harbor with nine crew members aboard. Over a hundred years passed before the sub was raised by archaeologists and transport to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston. There it was placed in a large steel tank filled with 55,000 gallons of chilled fresh water to minimize bacteria and corrosion and to protect and stabilize the sub. Since then, scientists have been working to study and preserve the Civil War submarine. Tourist are welcome. Video of Submarine Discovery
